Many people will be looking to give their homes and business premises a new look for 2018. But what are the top trends expected to be in the New Year? Here is a look at some design ideas which are being tipped to gain in popularity over the coming 12 months.

Not-So Mellow Yellow – Bright Minion yellow is in the spotlight, with Pantone listing the shade as one of their key colours for spring 2018, along with pinks, greens and other bright shades. Yellow feature walls or pieces of furniture can look very striking, but the colour is also effective when used sparingly. For instance, a bright saffron throw, cushion or vase can add interest to an interior largely made up of neutral colours. A yellow rug will also make a great contrast with wooden flooring, or with quality wood style laminate flooring, such as Hazeltine from Xylo’s Urban Click range.

Back to Black – By contrast with all the bright colours being lined up for 2018, designers are also saying that black is back. A dramatic black wall can create a backdrop for lighter furniture, paintings or framed photos. Especially in smaller spaces, it can be advisable to use black sparingly to avoid the effect being too overwhelming, for instance by painting an interior door or skirting board in the shade. Increasingly, blacks and dark greys are being used as neutrals in areas where white would be the norm, including kitchens and bathrooms. Waterville Dark Grey or Dark Grey Stone Effect designs from Xylo’s Dynamic Click vinyl range will enhance the theme in these settings.

Showing Your Metal – Metallics are a trend which has been evolving lately, with copper starting to give way to gold and brass. Looking ahead to 2018, some designers are suggesting that demand for silver and polished nickel will now grow further. The industrial look is still very popular and affecting choices of metals, with stripped-back factory-style metals providing an alternative to glitz.

Hearth and Home – There’s nothing cosier than snuggling down in front of a real fire, and increasingly hearths are returning as focal points for living space. Fireplaces have been seeing a growth in interest, which is tipped to soar further over the coming year. Even in homes or office conversions where the fireplace isn’t actually in use, it can still provide an exciting design feature.

Wood burning stoves in kitchens or dining areas are also in demand, which looks set to continue. Many people choose unusual types of fire surround, ranging from traditional looks to more modern and quirky designs.

Alongside the very latest designer looks, many current themes are expected to continue, including the passion for layering and textures partly inspired by Danish “hygge”, or cosiness. Demand for rustic and natural interiors, with a lot of wood and soft understated colours such as greys and greens, is also tipped to continue, as well as the UK’s enduring love for shabby chic. These are looks which never seem to go out of fashion because they are so endlessly adaptable and easy to live with.

Some customers will of course also prefer a completely individual look, not fitting into any specific theme.
