Spring Cleaning Ideas for Your Home

With spring just around the corner, it really is time that thoughts turned to getting rid of all the dirt, mud and grime which inevitably accumulates over the winter months.

Xylo Flooring provide high quality wood flooring for the building industry and retail trade. Here are our room-by-room tips for cleaning up your home.

Kitchens

Ovens can be cleaned with a mix of baking soda and water, then left overnight before wiping the residue away. If you have a microwave, heat up some white vinegar and water in a mug until it steams, leave it for a few seconds, then wipe the interior clean with a cloth.

Get rid of any out-of-date foodstuffs from your fridge. If feasible, defrost the freezer overnight to get rid of any excess ice, but put some old newspaper underneath it to prevent any moisture damage. If there are any internal stains to the fridge, then a toothbrush and some toothpaste will lift them off.

Bathrooms

All-purpose cleaner should be applied to wall tiles and ceilings. Then turn on the shower and let the steam build up for a few minutes before wiping the surfaces clean with a cloth. A mix of baking soda and lemon works well to remove limescale and soap scum build-up around sinks and taps.

Shower heads need descaling just like kettles, whilst shower curtains can be put in the washing machine along with some old towels. This will help soak up the bacteria and mildew. Rather than using bleach in the toilet bowl, vinegar will provide a long-lasting deterrent to bacteria every time you flush.

Bedrooms and Lounges

Pet hair can be a problem on blankets, duvets and sofas; they either escape the attentions of the vacuum cleaner or there are too many for the machine to cope with. Careful use of adhesive tape with ensure all the hairs are removed.

Both types of room can be given a new lease of life by cleaning the windows. A mix of washing-up liquid and warm water will be effective if you don’t fancy using a professional window cleaner. Curtains can either be machine washed on a slow speed spin, or carefully vacuumed.

To deep clean your mattress, try a mixture of white vinegar, baking soda and water, followed by vacuuming. Remember to do both sides!

Don’t Forget to Declutter…

If you haven’t already fully-embraced the digital revolution, maybe now is the time to do so. Investing in a eBook reader such as a Kindle will help free up space on your bookshelves, while converting your physical music collection to a digital format will also create more room. You can also cut down on paperwork by storing all your documents electronically and requesting your banking and billing correspondence to be delivered by email rather than by post.

Go through all your old clothing and make sure there’s nothing there that doesn’t fit you any longer. You can sell it on eBay, while local charity shops may be happy to accept it. Out-of-season clothing can be put into storage – at specialist sites if you don’t have enough room in your own home.

…and Don’t Forget the Flooring Either

Xylo Flooring’s range of quality wooden flooring shouldn’t need any deep cleaning or vacuuming, unlike carpets. An occasional wash or wipe with a cloth is enough to keep them clean, although any spillages or leaks should be dealt with as quickly as possible.

We also supply a range of accessories, including several OSMO maintenance products, to provide more long-term protection. These include a selection of wax cleaners, oils and repair kits.
